New Deal Europe Virtual briefing between the travel media and the key tourism boards, development agencies and tourism associations of the Balkan region.
Pent up demand, booking surges, successful vaccination roll outs and high personal savings are all contributing to the UK and US markets being the primary focus for the tourism restart, according to speakers at New Deal Europe’s Destination and Media Summit this week.
Tourism boards in the Balkans region were invited to a ‘meet the media’ session to hear from senior travel journalists about consumer sentiment in the source markets and the preparedness of the destinations to receive visitors.
As we predicted in our recent webinar, the UK government announced that from Monday 19th July, it will no longer recommend against travel to amber list countries. Travellers from England, who have had both doses of the vaccine, will be able to travel to amber list countries without the need to quarantine on their return. In addition, the requirement for three PCR tests will be reduced to two. Children under the age of 18 will also be exempt from quarantine on their return to England.
This is a massive opportunity for the countries in the New Deal Europe area, all of whom are on the UK’s green or amber list of destinations.
New Deal Europe has two partnerships in operation at the moment to help you engage with and capture the UK market:
- Global Travel Week powered by Connections – the first live B2B travel trade event targeting senior buyers in the UK travel industry.
- OTT - Online Travel Training – travel training for the UK travel agency network.
Spaces are still available for Global Travel Week within the New Deal Europe pavillion. This is the first event since the start of the pandemic where tour operators and travel planners will have the opportunity to meet with suppliers. We will be highlighting all the elements which make the Greater Balkans the ideal choice for travellers in the post pandemic World, so contact us today to secure your place, and be amongst the first to speak face to face with senior decision makers.
A big thank you to our sponsors, the Slovenian Tourist Board and Happy Tours for a great overview of the beautiful country of Slovenia. You can watch the presentation by the MD of Happy Tours, Sašo Krumpak, here and learn all about their small but varied country.
Getting great feedback on New Deal Europe’s first seminar of the day. Tom Scott, Head of Travel Sales at News UK, presented their findings on research we commissioned into travellers’ attitudes to the Balkans as a holiday destination. In case you missed it, you can watch the insightful presentation here.
New Deal Europe day has launched with a simultaneous live broadcast from Tower Bridge in London and the studio in Boston Spa, England. The co-founders Tine Murn and Robert Dee welcomed delegates from 36 countries to the first ever travel trade event focused on the entire Balkan region.

2 October 2020
New Deal Europe, the Balkan travel trade workshop and forum, will deliver its first event on Monday 5th October with 1,250 meetings and three seminars.
The event brings together 114 tour operators from around the globe, 60% of them from the UK, to meet with 47 tourism suppliers from 11 Balkan Countries. Tine Murn, co-founder of the event, said, “We are delighted with the response to our event. The last minute rush from companies wishing to register and take part was a challenge for us, but a very positive one, and I’m delighted that we can bring so many people together in this time of crisis.”
“We really want to develop tourism to the region and help everyone to do that even in these challenging times” added Robert Dee, the other co-founder of the event. “With that in mind our keynote seminar will be about sharing ideas between operators and suppliers to get through the crisis and generate business now and beyond the pandemic.” Buyers and suppliers were asked to choose their appointments based upon their availability throughout the day, as they dial in from around the world.
“Every delegate has a bespoke set of meetings and more than half of the suppliers will have completely full diaries with 34 meetings and 3 seminars” said Murn. ‘The pieces are in place for a very productive day and a great first event. We now have a perfect platform for growth for future events focused on delivering tourism to this exciting region.”

'Supporting Each Other': the theme of the inaugural event also revealed
New Deal Europe has launched and is now a live event.
The appointment selection for the first ever Balkan focused travel trade fair opened this week, following a live broadcast to all delegates by the founders, Tine Murn and Robert Dee, and their partners, Jacobs Media Group.
Senior buyers from over 20 countries, and tourism providers from 11 Balkan countries, are now arranging around 1,200 meetings which will take place on 5th October.
The theme for the event was also revealed - ‘Supporting Each Other’. Robert Dee said, ‘If there is one thing I have learned over my years in tourism it’s that in this industry we are all interdependent. Every company has a part to play, whether that is sourcing guests, transporting them, accommodating them or giving them great experiences. In this time of global crisis it has never been more important to understand each other’s business, and to support each other to get through to the other side’.
There will be several seminars on this theme throughout the event, including a keynote session with senior travel industry figures sharing ideas and best practice to keep businesses afloat, and assist them to win business.
The speakers for the keynote session were also announced this week. They are: Jennifer Tombaugh, President of leading US tour operator, Tauck; Andrea Godfrey, Brand Manager of Regent Holidays, the first UK travel company to operate in Albania; Dominic Burke, Managing Director of Travel Centres, the leading independent travel agency consortia in Ireland; Antonia Urlić, Executive Director of Croatian luxury hotel brand, Stories Hotel; and Alp Ozaman, the New York based Regional Marketing Manager of Turkish Airlines. The session will be moderated by Lee Hayhurst, Executive Director of Travolution.
Other sessions will include country presentations and a seminar lead by Tom Scott, Head of Travel Sales at News UK, who will reveal the results of a survey, specially commissioned by New Deal Europe, into UK travellers’ attitudes to the Balkans as a destination. Tine Murn said, ‘this is new and important primary source information, which should help all the companies attending to target their marketing to the right places’.

15 March 2020
New Deal Europe 2020 in London has been postponed to 5th October 2020. Please take note of the following advice.
We have been closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the Covid-19 virus, as the safety and wellbeing of our event delegates and partners has always been of paramount importance to our team, and remains our top priority. In the light of fast moving events in the last few days, we have come to the difficult, but necessary, conclusion
that we need to postpone New Deal Europe.
The good news is that the new date is already confirmed as Monday 05 October.
We remain confident that the current situation will reach a peak and that the recovery period, when it comes, will drive new and increased demand later in the year. We know from experience that the new date of 05 October will work for suppliers and buyers alike, as it sits comfortably in the buying calendar. Given the cancellation of so many travel trade events, and the dramatic decline in business caused by consumer cancellations, we believe that the October event will prove to be even more important for business than an event in March. Please rest assured that we will roll all existing contracts into the October event,
under the same conditions.
We will continue to share essential updates and developments on the event in the coming months and look forward to bringing our industry together and playing a central role in the future growth of travel and tourism to the region. Thank you for your confidence and support in New Deal Europe, and we look forward to welcoming you to London to do business in October.
If you have any questions at this time, please don’t hesitate to contact any of our directors or our operations via info@newdealeurope.com.

Industry leaders from all sides of the travel industry came together to share best practice on how to get through the Covid crisis.
Bulgaria is a wonderful combination of nature, ancient culture, healing springs, winter peaks and warm sea.
Bulgarian lands enjoy the splendour of four different seasons – fragrant spring, hot summer, golden fruit-bearing autumn and snowy winter.
Each season is magnificent and delivers an abundance of pleasure. Thanks to its location in the southern part of Europe the Bulgarian winter resorts benefit from an abundance of sunlight and splendid snow cover. The country boasts over 600 healing mineral water springs.
The mixture of wonderful nature and modern Spa-complexes contributes to Bulgaria being a preferred Spa and wellness destination. Bulgaria is also famous for its wine. Southern sun, fruit-bearing soil, and old traditions originating from the Thracians combine with diligence and love to make Bulgarian wine highly valued worldwide.
